Children from Ballywalter Primary School are engaged with senior citizens in an intergenerational history project. The Ballywalter Intergenerational Project is a reminiscence and recall project involving members of the Ballywalter seniors group and P7 children from the local primary school. The theme of the project is 'Ballywalter Now and Then'. Its aim is to record the history of Ballywalter as told by senior residents with help from Ballywalter P.S. This will be in the form of a booklet sourced, designed and written by the participants.
The project is organised through the WEA - Carolyn Hale, EDRCN - Sandra Henderson, Irene Dempster development/youth worker SEELB, and Colin Dempster, manager of the community hall. Intergenerational approaches are an effective way to address a number of issues, many of them key government priorities, like building active communities, promoting citizenship, regenerating neighbourhoods and addressing inequality.
Reminiscence is the process of thinking, recalling, telling or representing by means of oral, written and artistic forms of expression, personal past experience. Reminiscence is regarded as a source of stimulation, a component of social exchange, and a way to engender personal satisfaction. Moreover, it can stave off loneliness, depression and the consequent decline into ill health. It encourages communal identities, social interaction and the building of friendships.
